Sports and Athletics | Basketball - I play in a full-court pick-up game at the Mid-Island Y JCC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30 to 7:45 AM
Swmming - I swim after basketball.
Softball - played for Men's Club Team of Temple Beth El, Patchogue for two summers.
Bowling - bowled in the Farmingdale Jewish Center League in about 1985 with my father; also bowled in a league in Poughkeepsie for a season or two. Both leagues were handicapped leagues as opposed to "scratch leagues. My average was around 172.
Fencing - Varsity Sabre Fencer for Yeshiva College of Yeshiva University. Gave it up to serve as President of the Dramatics Society. When I attended graduate school at Ohio University in Athens, OH, I taught acting students a course in Fencing for the Stage, which I developed in order to keep my hand in the sport and to earn some needed funds. In 1979, I won a Bronze Medal in Sabre in the New York State's Empire State Games, the State-wide armature athletics competition. I taught Fencing for Dutchess County Community College and taught and coached Fencing at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY and taught and coached Fencing at the State University of New York at New Paltz, NY, and taught adult educations courses in Fencing at the IBM Country Club, in Poughkeepsie, NY, at Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, NY and at Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. I accompanied several of my Fencing students to the National Fencing Championships, which were held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and to the National Junior Olympics held at Harvard University, in Cambridge, MA. In the 1980's, I served as a Director Technique, which is the term used to describe the referee in Fencing matches, in the local inter-High School league in Suffolk County, Long Island, NY.
Maestro Lorand Marcell, Sabre Coach, Yeshiva College, NY c 1964 to 1968
Baseball - I love watching any good baseball game. I played first base in Little League and have a fair understanding of the fundamentals of the game. Ilike baseball memorobilia and baseball cards, though I am hardly a collector. My wife and I resently spent the Thanksgiving Holiday at Cooperstown, NY, where we throughly enjoyed the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the town itself with its beautiful surrounding country side and the enchanting Otesgo Lake.
Tennis - I played tennis when almost nobody I knew played tennis. I still have my Jack Kramer tennis racquet and always say I would like to get back to the game. But, I find the game has evolved into a big hitter's game with a tremendous amount of power substituted for the fleet and graceful finesse of the game I enjoyed. Matching one's self against others in a highly competitive game was so difficult for me that I leaned away from the game until now and continue to do so in favor of basketball, which offers me the competition and team play I seek. |
