Golf:

Golf - I play infrequently but while I was living in Poughkeepsie, I had the Golf Pro at the College Hill Golf Course make a custom set of golf clubs for me, figuring that I was probably not going to get any taller. I still play with those clubs and, since they seem to still fit just right, I can never blame the reults of my efforts on my clubs.

I have one "rule", if you want to call it a rule, if you would like to play golf together with me: "No showing off". (That was my father's phrase that he would use when we played together and were paired up with people we didn't know. I still think it's a good ice breaker at the start of a round of golf like that when even good players can be expectatious if not down right nervous).

This year, in 2006, I participated in the American Kidney Fund Northeast Region Golf Classic, which was held at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack, NY on Monday, August 7th. With that as a motivator, I asked some friends to join me in the event and was glad to have a full foursome at the event. To get read for the golf itsel, I cobbled together what I am referring to as The POTUS-presumptuous’ Unorthodox Tether-free Tumler Society, which is made up of Drew Kopf and a few of my friends and their freinds, when we need substitutes, who have a great time playing the great game of golf together. Rounds are initially being played at the Nassau County Christopher Morley Park in Port Washington, NY, which has a very nice executive 9-hole golf course.

Other golf outings are scheduled as time permits and with the idea of experiencing the beauty of the many courses available to us in the United States. These golf outings can be reviewed by clicking HERE.

Round 10: Christopher Morley Golf Course Scheduled for Thursday, October 5, 2006 The round is scheduled pending a decission regarding the leaf condition on the course. Current Weather Forcast: Click Here
Round 9: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, October 5, 2006 Highlights: We reshuffled the deck today at the last minute. Hank had canceled to hold his wife Elaine's “other hand” (his words) while she had shoulder surgery this morning. Mike took his place, but drove up announcing that Ken would not be playing today in order to be there for his father-in-law, who had fallen and was in the hospital. We wish both patients a speedy recovery. So it was a walk-in-the-park for Don, Mike and Drew. But, Don made it very special one by chipping in on the 4th for birdie; tweet tweet. He had 4 bogies to go with it, but was high enough on the other holes to yield the low score of the day honors to Drew. Mike was there with the occasional seasoned golf shot like his nice chip on the 8th, but he was tree-centric and playing the part of spectator by lifting his head (his observation) more than usual. It was Drew's 6 bogies and his par on the 8th that gave him the game in today's round. He is anticipating getting a new set of clubs and must be trying to squeeze all he can out of the ones he's been using for the last 26 years. The leaves on the ground were making finding balls sometimes almost impossible. Without the means to have a fore-caddie, we may opt to suspend play until the leaves return to the trees where they belong.
Round 8: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, September 28, 2006 Highlights: Almost an entire set of duplicate golfers who looked just like our foursome showed up at Christopher Morley Golf Course and played in our stead, except for Don; he was himself hitting a 43 with pars on holes 4 and 8 and bogies on 3, 5 and 6. There were some moments of brilliance from Ken, Hank and Drew, but it was slogging struggle with lost balls and all sorts of mis-hits that made us talk about what a nice walk in the park we were having; but not golf. Drew did nearly ace the 8th with an 8-iron that left its mark inches from the cup, but he settled for a par. He bogied 3, 6 and 7 which kept him not too far off of Don's lead, but finished with a 46.
Round 8: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, September 21, 2006 Highlights: Ken was back from Ireland but the layoff cost him momentum; though he started off with a bogie on the first and came back with a bogie on the , third, he was mostly triple bogie or worse a couple of times for the rest of the round. Th3re were isolated moments where he hit the ball soundly, but putting them together was not happening for him. Don, who has been playing well on the Eisenhower Blue, parred the second, but struggled on all but the forth which he bogied. Hank and Drew played even a 42 for the morning, which was Hank's best score of the season to date. Drew was two strokes of his personal best on the Morley course and hit the ball with some consistency showing the results of two recent rounds on the Eisenhower Blue.
Round 7: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, September 7, 2006 Highlights: Don was able to put him temporary medical distraction completely behind him and stepped up to hit pars on holes 3, 6 and 8 and, overall, shot a 39, which averages out to be one above par for each of the nine holes, or bogie golf. Norman was nice enough to join us again while Ken was away in Ireland. He parred the 4th and worked on his iron play the rest of the round. It was a soggy course and the spongy turf, solid bunkers and slower than slow green took their toll on the rest of us. Hank sandwiched in a couple of bogies on the 4th and 5th before he got fully warmed up for his great finish on the 9th with a sparkling "come back" par; when he gets a par like that and on the last hole, you can bet, Hank is comin' back. A guy showed up who looked just like Drew, and exact duplicate, who played his round for him but he was nowhere near the golfer that the real Drew is. Oh sure, he had several nice shots, but he could not put it all together like Drew had been doing up until this point. We hope the real Drew is back next round. Note of Interest: Don came in describing some of the high points of a review of the Morley Golf Course when Drew informed the group that he had written that review only last week and posted at www.golflink.com and started quoting from his article in the way of a proof. Take a look at the Course Review describing the Morley Golf Course and see if you agree.
Round 6: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, August 31, 2006 Highlights: Norm filled in for Mike who was filling in for Ken, who is on his way to Ireland for a vacation. Norm had joined, Don and Drew and one other friend, John, to form a foursome in the recent American Kidney Fund Golf Outing at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club. The course had a delayed opening and our opting to go for breakfast before playing delayed us further with a 45 minute wait behind those who came to sign up to play while we were at a local diner. In future, we will wait at the course. The round was one of adaptation and surprises. Hole-number one was under repair which took a good portion of it including the green out of play. Don was off his stride having recently had a medical procedure; his golf ball kept going right and we are still trying to figure out what caused that. Norman, who plays mostly the full length course, showed the way by mostly playing bogie, par and even birdie golf with nice 40 for the 9 holes. Hank found out that he needs seven holes to warm up, because as soon as he did, he parred the 8th and after driving the green on the 9th leaving him with a mid-length putt for an Eagle, he got close and then got his birdie 3. Nice going Hank. Drew had his moments with pars on the 5th, 7th and 9th holes. The score card for today's round has Drew's notes on where he hit and what club he used on each hole. There is something to playing a course and getting to know it and what clubs work where and under what conditions. It makes the game that much more interesting and seems to be what the pros do for a good reason, it works.
Round 5: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, August 24, 2006 Highlights: Mike, filling in this round for Hank, who was in Canada, took 5 strokes of his previous round. Ken continues to improve taking 6 strokes off compared to his last round got another par; this time in the 9th. Don, back from playing on the big courses, shot another 42 in pretty much bogie golf fashion. Drew shot his personal best of 41 with pars on the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 9th, where he chipped for Eagle but settled for par.
Round 4: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, August 17, 2006 Highlights: Ken and Hank hit their personal bests. Mike substituted for Don and had a couple of bogies and a several nice shots that just need to be woven together to bring his stroke count down. Drew drove the green on the 9th and faced an Eagle Putt for the first time. He settled for birdie, which was his second of the morning.
Round 3: Christopher Morley Golf Course Tuesday, August 1, 2006 Highlights: Our group was a threesome today with the great threat of super-high heat in the 100's threatening to drive us off the course. We lucked out with the heat by starting a half hour earlier. Don parred the 1st and 7th and had 5 bogies for a nice round of 42. Ken hit is best score to date with a 48 making bogie on 3, 4, 6 and 8. Drew put two pars together on the 8th and 9th along with 3 bogies to catch Don at the end with his round of 42.
Round 2: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, July 27, 2006 Highlights: Don parred the 2nd and 9th and had a bogie on the 3rd. Ken got par on the 8th, his first one according to him, and started to triangulate towards knowing where he hits and where he is aiming. Hank had bogie on the 3rd like it was meant to be. He also has some shots that went just right; some times too far right, but there is a future there. Drew had bogie on the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th with some isolated shots that looked like golf shots on some of the other holes too.
Round 1: Christopher Morley Golf Course Thursday, July 20, 2006 Highlights: Every one enjoyed our inagural round of golf together. Don had a swell round with 2 pars, on the 4th and the 9th and 5 bogies on five other holes. Drew had a par on the 6th and four bogies getting just nosed out by Don for overall score. Hank and Ken had a couple of bogies each and saw some good things happen as the round progressed.
